Elon Musk's social media network X has sparked significant backlash after people used its AI chatbot Grok to change pictures of women by stripping their attire.
Multiple cases have surfaced where the technology has been used to virtually strip female subjects to make them appear in bikinis without permission, as well as to place them in sexualized scenarios.
XAI, the organization behind Grok, remained silent to inquiries, except for an standard message stating "legacy media lies".
A government representative stated that new laws is being introduced to outlaw nudification tools. Under a upcoming law, anyone who distributed such tools would "be subject to a prison sentence and heavy penalties".
"X or Grok is capable of halting these types of abuse if they chose to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "appear to enjoy impunity."
The regulator Ofcom said platforms must "consider the danger" of people accessing illegal content on their platforms, but did not specify whether it was presently examining X or Grok in regarding AI-generated images.
Grok is a no-cost chatbot—with some paid-for features—which answers X users' prompts when they tag it in a post.
It is commonly used to provide commentary or more background to other posters' remarks, but people on X are also can modify an uploaded image through its artificial intelligence picture modification feature.
The tool has been criticised for allowing users to produce photos and clips with nudity and sexualised material, and it was earlier alleged to have been involved in creating sexually explicit content of celebrities.
"X has been permitting the production and spread of these pictures for a long time without taking any measures and we have not witnessed any action by regulators," Professor McGlynn added.
XAI's own acceptable use policy forbids "depicting likenesses of people in a pornographic way".
In a statement, Ofcom said it was unlawful to "create or circulate non-consensual intimate images or illegal content" and confirmed this applied to explicit AI images made with AI.
It said services such as X were obligated to take "appropriate actions" to "minimize the danger" of users viewing illegal content on their platforms and to remove it swiftly when they are notified of it.
