19 of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been won on hard courts

A resurgent the Russian player claimed his first championship for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has experienced a torrid period, achieving just one match at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the American major.

The player's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in especial - caused him exiting of the elite rankings and finally parting ways with former mentor Cervara.

Presently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.

It is his first title since the Rome competition and first on a hard court since spring of the previous year.

The win also indicates the Russian has won twenty-one victories at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters simultaneously, so to win a title is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my child Victoria, because the first title I got when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in Halle earlier this year.

Medvedev's counter-punching approach and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to question if his capacity to perform at the elite level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an better service.

The champion recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players swapped break points in the second set before the challenger, striving for his initial professional championship, seized the initiative to create a final set.

The opponent rescued four early-game chances in a tight third set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the net area, with his opponent failing to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
