Norris Leads Piastri in Sao Paulo Practice

McLaren drivers in action — Lando Norris has beaten Oscar Piastri at each of the previous five grands prix.

Lando Norris just pipped team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The British racer, who took the championship lead from his teammate by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs.

Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session.

Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his team ran a unique setup.

Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, though minor, when he spun at corner four early in the session.

The Japanese lost control over the track edges before rotating through the run-off area, and was lucky to escape with just a slight brush of the wall.

The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the practice, turning around through the quick descending corner leading to the last turn on to the main straight.

The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver.

Norris and Piastri were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's pace.

The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
