RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
