Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defence official has revealed that the MoD is actively looking into the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in any cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Background

This announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This broader defence environment highlights the importance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
