Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
